Around 50% of men experience a certain degree of hair loss by their 50s. Many men experience hair loss during their 20s and 30s.
Hair loss occurs mostly in the front parts of the scalp while the rear parts remain intact. Hair transplantation is a procedure which consists of an extraction of loss resistant follicles for a transfer to bald areas. The transferred follicles survive in their new habitat and produce strands of hair again.
Previously, the FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) technique was used for hair transplant. This technique consisted of removing a skin strap from the scalp (usually from the back of the head) to extract follicles. But the FUE (Follicular Unit Transplant) technique leaves no scar and requires no stitches. The healing process is therefore shortened.
The procedure is done under local anaesthesia. Between 4000 and 5000 grafts of follicles can be extracted. Each follicle produces an average of 2 or 2.5 strands of hair. This can be 4 strands of hair in the best of the cases. Our experience shows that best results are reached when lower strands producing follicles are transferred to the front part of the head for a more natural hair line look and richer strand producing follicles are transferred to upper parts of the head for a denser hair texture.
The survival rate of transplanted follicles is between 95 and 98 percent. To guarantee maximum hair growth, a PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) treatment is applied following the hair transplant. Blood taken from the patient is put in a centrifuge to obtain plasma rich thrombocytes. These thrombocytes, stimulate tissue growth and strengthen follicles.
3 days after hair transplant, the patient is required to wash his head with a special shampoo and apply a lotion. Normal washing can be applied after 10 days of treatment.
2 weeks after follicle transfer, the newly growing hair falls off due to post procedure trauma. But it is not permanent. 2 months following the procedure, hair starts to grow again. Final results are observed between 6 and 12 months.
